Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise signs of disease or pests in fish and other aquatic life, and take appropriate reporting and response action.The unit applies to individuals who carry out routine tasks in the seafood industry where they have daily contact with aquatic organisms.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety, biosecurity and environmental regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Identify signs of disease or pests in aquatic life
  • Monitor aquatic life for signs or symptoms of disease or pests
  • Compare signs of potential disease infection or pest species with own experience of common endemic diseases or pests in the species
  • Assess extent of the problem in the species where signs indicate a potential disease or pest issue
  • Assess any environmental factors that may be contributing to the disease or pest issue
  • Seek advice from supervisors, professionals or appropriate authorities when signs indicate a potential disease or pest
       
Element: Respond to signs of disease or pest in aquatic life
  • Report signs of potential disease or a pest that presents a biosecurity risk to appropriate authorities immediately according to workplace procedures
  • Implement biosecurity measures according to organisational biosecurity plans and instructions from appropriate authority

Assessment Tasks
